Oregon Speed Laws

In Oregon, speed zones are established either by state statute (statutory speed), or through an engineering and traffic investigation (designated speed). State statutes give Oregon Motorists the following statutory speed limits:

  • 15 mph - Alleys.
  • 20 mph - Business districts, school zones when children are present.
  • 25 mph - Residential districts, public parks, ocean shores.
  • 55 mph - Open and rural highways, urban interstate highways.
  • 60 mph - Some interstate highway locations.
  • 65 mph - Rural interstate highways.

Designated speeds, such as those posted 35 mph or 45 mph override these statutory speeds. These designated speeds are determined through an engineering and traffic investigation that is in accordance with nationally accepted traffic engineering standards and procedures.
SPECIAL WARNING: Drivers convicted of going 100 mph, or faster, will face a mandatory minimum 30-90 day driving suspension, in addition to a $1,103 fine. Effective: January, 2006.
