About Us
Oregon Motorcyclist represents the shared vision and effort of two Oregonians and avid motorcyclists: Ted Gavel and Steve Walker. We met in August 2005, immediately identified an unfilled niche and recognized our shared ideals about what a road documentation site should be. We began building this site shortly thereafter. Ted brought significant momentum with photographs and road logs from a previous venture, while Steve brought professional programming and web site design experience. After months of site design and countless revisions, Oregon Motorcyclist has become a reality.
This site is primarily interested in paved roads of all kinds, from the I-5 and I-84 superslabs to remote paved logging roads. Oregonmotorcyclist.com is an evolving endeavor and new ride reports will be added regularly. Be sure to sign up for our e-mail newsletter for site updates and new ride reports. We're not sure it's possible to document every great ride in Oregon in a normal lifespan, and we don't claim to have covered the whole state. We do promise to give you our honest, albeit totally subjective, evaluation of the rides we have documented.
We offer our ride reports using pictures; maps; GPS coordinates; and written descriptions of the pavement condition, type of road, technical difficulty, attractions and amenities. In the spirit of the Internet community, we encourage you to offer your comments about the roads by clicking the "Comment On This Ride" button at the end of every ride report. Your comments will be added to the report. We do, however, reserve the right to edit your input for appropriateness and clarity.
Many riding years have passed with the site authors giving no thought to this project, so we'll be joyfully backtracking the many roads we've ridden before, as well as riding roads not ridden by us, in order to share with you this motorcycling wonderland called Oregon. It's a tough job, but somebody has to do it.
Now about us from a motorcycling perspective:
Ted Gavel
- Thirty something years old
- Now studying Nurse Anesthesia at the University of Pittsburgh
- Upon returning to Oregon I plan to purchase a KTM 990 Adventure and begin showcasing Oregon's amazing adventure riding opportunities.
Steve Walker
- Fifty something years old
- Eugene resident since 1975
- Works as a Computer Programmer at a local newspaper
- I began motorcycling in 2001 after significant enticement and inspiration from my son. After taking the Team Oregon course at Lane Community College, I bought a 2001 Honda Shadow ACE 750. Since discovering my true motorcycling passion is touring, I now ride a 2004 BMW R1150RT. I'm addicted to the spirit of discovery and the lure of the open road.
